The Process Explained
What is Stump Grinding?
A stump grinder is a powerful machine with a rotating cutting wheel fitted with hardened teeth. The operator works the wheel back and forth across the stump, grinding it down in layers until it's typically 150–300mm below the surface. The hole is then backfilled with the grindings or fresh soil, and the area can be re-turfed or replanted.
Unlike digging a stump out by hand, grinding leaves the surrounding ground largely undisturbed — no crater, no torn-up lawn, no damaged borders.
Making the Right Choice
Stump Grinding vs Full Removal
Both methods remove the stump — the difference is how much of the root system comes out, and what you're planning to do with the ground afterwards.
Stump grinding is right when...
- You want the stump gone quickly with minimal mess
- The area will be lawn, planting beds, or a patio
- The stump is near fences, walls, or sheds you want to protect
- The roots can be left to rot down naturally
You may need full removal when...
- You're building an extension, garage, or garden room on the spot
- You're laying a driveway or foundations
- You need the entire root plate taken out
